Gramineae) este o plant\u00e3 originar\u0103 din America Central\u0103 cultivat\u0103  \u00een multe regiuni ale lumii ca plant\u0103 alimentar\u0103, industrial\u0103 \u0219i furajer\u0103 \u0219i care reprezint\u0103 al\u0103turi de gr\u00e2u 80% din produc\u021bia de cereale.<br \/>\n\u00cen Rom\u00e2nia se folosesc mai multe denumiri de tip regionalism, porumbul fiind denumit \u0219i c\u0103lambuc, ciolomad\u0103, cocena\u0219i (pl.), coliba\u0219, cucori\u021b\u0103, cucuruz, g\u00e2rni\u0219or, m\u0103lai, p\u0103pu\u0219\u0103, p\u0103pu\u0219oi, tenchi.<br \/>\nZea mays L. era utilizat  de aztecii din America cu mult \u00eenainte de Cristofor Columb \u0219i a  fost adus \u00een Europa \u00een secolul XV-lea, de c\u0103tre Cortez.<br \/>\nIndienii din America socoteau porumbul un panaceu universal, apreciat datorit\u0103 \u00eensu\u0219irilor sale diuretice.<br \/>\nPorumbul a fost legat de istoria maia\u0219ilor, aztecilor,popoare din Anzii Cordilieri, la care m\u0103m\u0103liga reprezenta hrana principal\u0103 a oamenilor de r\u00e2nd.<br \/>\n\u00cen medicina popular\u0103 rom\u00e2neasc\u0103 se \u00eent\u00e2lnesc mult mai multe utiliz\u0103ri terapeutice ale acestei plante, dec\u00e2t  \u00een \u021bara sa de origine, America.<br \/>\n\u00cen Banat \u0219i Transilvania atest\u0103rile istorice arat\u00e3 c\u0103 \u00eencep\u00e2nd cu  anul 1791 porumbul a fost socotit\u0103 ca plant\u0103 alimentar\u0103 \u0219i a \u00eenlocuit meiul.<br \/>\nPorumbul \u00eenflore\u0219te \u00een lunile iunie-iulie,are tulpina \u00eenalt\u0103 \u0219i groas\u0103, neramificat\u0103, care se nume\u0219te popular \u201ecocean\u201d, cu frunze lungi \u0219i ascu\u021bite la v\u00e2rf, aspre. Pe aceea\u0219i plant\u0103 se g\u0103sesc flori feminine \u0219i flori masculine,frunzele sunt mari \u0219i liniare,stigmatul pistilului este foarte lung \u0219i formeaz\u0103 m\u0103tasea porumbului,fructul este o cariops\u0103 care con\u021bine amidon, substan\u021be proteice \u0219i uleiuri.<br \/>\nUnele variet\u0103\u021bi de porumb  cresc p\u00e2n\u0103 la 7 metri \u00een \u00een\u0103l\u021bime, porumbul comercial este cultivat la o \u00een\u0103l\u021bime maxim\u0103 de 2,5 metri.<br \/>\n100 g de porumb fiert are o valoare caloric\u00e3 de 97 kcal, con\u021bine 74% amidon, magneziu prezent \u00een cantit\u0103\u021bi mari \u00een porumb \u0219i completeaz\u0103  lipsa acestui element din organism, caren\u0163\u00e3 care se datoreaz\u00e3 unor afec\u0163iuni ce au leg\u00e3tur\u00e3 cu \u00eemb\u0103tr\u00e2nirea organismului.<br \/>\nBoabele de porumb sunt utilizate pentru ob\u0163inerea  amidonului, spirtului, glucozei \u0219i dextrinei.
