Este men\u021bionat\u0103 de Dioscoride \u00een lista plantelor medicinale folosite de daci, sub numele de lax.<br \/>\nSe \u00eent\u00e2lne\u0219te at\u00e2t \u00een zonele calde de pe glob, c\u00e2t \u0219i \u00een cele reci. Cre\u0219te ca plant\u0103 spontan\u0103 sau cultivat\u0103 \u00een Europa, America \u0219i Asia.<br \/>\nPlanta are o tulpin\u0103 c\u0103rnoasa, t\u0103r\u00e2toare, de forma cilindric\u0103, iar frunzele spatulate, suculente, \u00eengustate spre baza. Florile sunt de culoare galben portocaliu sau ro\u0219iatice. Fructul este o capsul\u0103 cu numeroase semin\u021be mici de culoare cenu\u0219ie. \u00centr-un gram intr\u0103 cca 2.400 de semin\u0163e. O s\u0103m\u00e2n\u021b\u0103 \u00ee\u0219i p\u0103streaz\u0103 propriet\u0103\u021bile germinative 3 &#8211; 4 ani.<br \/>\nIarba gras\u00e3 este utilizat\u00e3 at\u00e2t ca aliment c\u00e2t \u015fi  pentru ameliorarea unor afec\u0163iuni. Se consum\u00e3 frunzele c\u0103rnoase \u015fi acri\u0219oare sub form\u0103 de salat\u0103. Se poate folosi sub form\u0103 de ceai sau infuzie, \u00een ameliorarea unor afec\u0163iuni ale sistemului digestiv.<br \/>\nDin punct de vedere nutri\u0163ional, este o surs\u00e3 important de antioxidan\u0163i. Este leguma cu cel mai mare con\u0163inut \u00een vitamina A. Con\u0163ine  cantit\u00e3\u0163i mari de vitamina C \u015fi complexul B.
